Professor Ann Berrington
Joint Head of Social Statistics and Demography, Professor of Demography and Social Statistics
Ann is a Professor of Demography and Social Statistics, and is currently joint head of Department. She also directs the Fertility & Family Strand of the ESRC Centre for Population Change at Southampton.
My research interests are concerned with the transition to adulthood, family formation and household change, and their association with inequalities across the life course
Ann has an undergraduate degree in Human Sciences from the University of Oxford, an MSc in Medical Demography from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a PhD in Social Statistics from the University of Southampton. She is an expert on life course research using longitudinal methods.
Ann is a member of the ESRC Strategic Advisory Network and an invited member of the ESRC Expert Advisory Group on Data, Methods and Infrastructure. She plays a significant role in engaging with stakeholders. She is currently a member of the Office for National Statistics Expert Group for National Population Projections, and an expert member of the Advisory Group for Population Projections at the Greater London Authority. She is an independent member of the UK Statistics Authority Research Accreditation Panel providing oversight of the framework that is used to accredit research projects, researchers and processing environments.
Previously Ann served as a member of the ESRC Grant Assessment Panel 2010-2015, a member of the ESRC Covid-Response Funding Panel, an invited member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Understanding Society and an advisor on family issues for the British birth cohorts.
